Spatial design commission : Glasgow Women’s Library

Commissions and open calls

Similar to public art commissions changing the ways in which people encounter a public area, spatial design commissions might help library visitors to encounter specific rooms or library spaces in new ways. In such projects, artists might be invited to think about the use or decoration of certain spaces, as well as its furniture, access, or uses. Glasgow Women’s Library for example commissioned visual artist Olivia Plender to transform the library’s community room. In response, she focused on feminist and queer health activism to create a more comfortable space that could nurture community, activism and resistance. One of the interventions in the room was a curtain with a photographic print on it, which gives the room a different shape and dynamic.
